What Does
X Over Mean?
When you see "30 over" or "60 over" on an injector listing, that's the percentage increase in nozzle flow rate compared to the stock nozzle. A 30-over injector flows 30% more fuel than the factory unit at the same rail pressure. More fuel means more power — if the tune supports it.
The nozzle size you need depends on your power goals, your supporting modifications, and your tuning platform. Bigger is not always better — an oversized injector without the right calibration will run rich, smoke, and make less power than a properly sized unit with a matching tune. The injector is the end of the fuel delivery chain. Every piece upstream — pump, rails, lift pump — has to support whatever you put in the hole.
| Nozzle Size | Flow Increase | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|
| Stock | Baseline | Reliability rebuild — no tune change required. Restores factory fuel delivery on a worn engine. |
| 15–30% Over | +15–30% | Bolt-on builds with mild tune. Good first step for trucks making modest power gains. |
| 60% Over | +60% | High-output street builds. Full calibration required. Popular for towing and street performance builds. |
| 100% Over | +100% | High-horsepower competition builds. Requires fully supporting fuel system and dedicated tune. |
| 150–200% Over | +150–200% | Sled pull and all-out competition. Everything in the fuel system must support the demand. |
| 250–500% Over | +250–500% | Purpose-built competition trucks at maximum fuel delivery. Requires a full supporting fuel system, high-flow lift pump, and a dedicated calibration built specifically around the injector size. |
Signs It's Time to Upgrade Your Injectors
- Excessive smoke under load — especially if it's worsening over time without tune changes
- Injector codes or rough idle that doesn't resolve with cleaning or pressure testing
- Power goals that exceed stock injector capacity — your tune has run out of headroom
- High mileage reliability rebuild — worn nozzles cause inconsistent spray and poor combustion
- Competition use where OEM or worn injectors aren't adequate for consistent results
Cummins 5.9L
2003 to 2007.
Both Generations.
The 5.9L Cummins runs six injectors and spans two distinct production generations — the early 2003–2004 common rail and the updated 2004.5–2007 late production. S&S covers both with injector sets built to fit and perform better than the factory units they replace.
Whether you're doing a reliability rebuild on a high-mileage 5.9 or building for more power, the right starting point is a matched set — not a mix of worn factory units and one new replacement. S&S sets come flow-matched for consistent cylinder-to-cylinder fuel delivery across all six holes.
"The single most common call we get about diesel performance is 'my truck smokes and it's down on power' — and the majority of the time, it starts with injectors."
— Ryan Milliken, Hardway Performance- Flow-matched set — consistent cylinder-to-cylinder fuel delivery across all six injectors
- Direct-fit — no modifications required, drops straight into the 5.9 head
- Multiple nozzle sizes — stock replacement through performance-oversized options
- Compatible with all 5.9L tuning platforms — EFILive, HP Tuners, and others
- Core charge required — return your old injectors at checkout

LB7 Through
L5P.
Six generations of Duramax. S&S Diesel Motorsport has built injectors for every one of them — from the original LB7 with its well-documented injector failure history, through the current L5P — each engineered to fit the application and perform better than the factory units they replace.
The LB7 deserves specific mention. LB7 injectors are the most notorious failure point on any diesel platform — factory units were prone to return line failures and internal wear, and it's not uncommon to find high-mileage trucks running on degraded injectors without knowing it. If you own an LB7 and it's never had injectors, address it before it addresses itself.
- LB7 (2001–2004) — tackles the most common and costly failure point on the early Duramax
- LLY (2004.5–2005) — direct replacement with S&S precision build quality
- LBZ (2006–2007) — performance options for one of the most sought-after Duramax generations
- LMM (2007.5–2010) — flow-matched sets for consistent performance across all eight cylinders
- LML (2011–2016) — covers the high-pressure CP4 generation with proper S&S fitment
- L5P (2017+) — current generation support with multiple nozzle sizes available

Factory Injectors
vs S&S Motorsport
High-mileage factory injectors don't fail all at once — they degrade gradually, giving you a slow, steady loss in power and fuel economy before they ever throw a code. Here's what changes when you put in a matched set of S&S units.
| Feature | Factory / OEM | S&S Diesel Motorsport |
|---|---|---|
| Nozzle condition | Worn orifices — inconsistent spray pattern and reduced atomization | ✓ Fresh precision-machined nozzles, optimized spray angle |
| Flow matching | None — each cylinder runs independently with no matched calibration | ✓ Flow-matched set for even delivery across all cylinders |
| Nozzle size options | OEM spec only — no oversized options available | ✓ Stock through 200% over depending on platform |
| HP headroom | Capped at OEM fuel delivery — no path to more power | ✓ Scales with your tune and supporting fuel system |
| Part availability | OEM dealer only or aftermarket remanufactured | ✓ In stock at Hardway Performance — direct from S&S |
| Core credit | N/A | ✓ Core return credit available — send back your old injectors |
Our Process
How We Spec & Calibrate
Hardway Performance sells S&S injectors for Cummins, Duramax, and Power Stroke — and writes Cummins calibrations. If you're on a Duramax or Power Stroke, we'll help you spec the right injector, but calibration is on your side. Physical installation on all platforms is handled by you or your preferred shop.
-
Confirm the diagnosis before you order
We review your symptoms and data before anything ships. A smoky engine with an injector code could mean one failed unit or a full set of worn injectors. Getting this right before you order prevents buying the wrong parts or doing the job twice.
-
Spec the right size for your build
We match the injector size to your actual power goals and current supporting modifications — not your wish list. Your fuel system, lift pump, and tune all factor in. If you're planning future upgrades, we'll build a path that accounts for them without going too big too soon.
-
Order the complete kit
Injectors plus the supporting hardware that should be replaced at the same time — feed tubes, seals, and any other consumables. We'll help you identify everything needed so your installer can complete the job cleanly in one visit without waiting on additional parts.
-
Write the Cummins calibration
Once your Cummins injectors are in, we build the tune around them. If you're going larger than stock, your ECM gets a calibration built specifically for the new nozzle size and your exact build setup. Remote calibration is available — you don't need to be local to us. Duramax and Power Stroke customers will need to source calibration from a tuner on their platform.
-
Verify the data after install
After the tune is loaded we review fueling data, smoke levels, and commanded vs. actual numbers to confirm everything is performing as calibrated. If anything needs adjustment based on real-world data, we handle it before you're done.
FAQ
Common Questions
What does "30 over" mean on an injector?
When you see "30 over" or "60 over" on an injector listing, that's the percentage increase in nozzle flow rate compared to the stock nozzle. A 30-over injector flows 30% more fuel than the factory unit at the same rail pressure. The right oversize depends on your power goals, your supporting modifications, and your tune — bigger is not always better without the calibration to match.
Do I need to retune after installing new injectors?
Stock-replacement injectors can go in without a tune change — you're restoring factory fuel delivery, not increasing it. Any injector larger than stock requires a calibration that accounts for the additional fuel delivery. Running oversized injectors without a supporting tune will cause rich running conditions, excessive smoke, and degraded performance. Contact Hardway Performance before ordering if you're unsure what your build supports.
Should I replace one injector or the full set?
If one injector has failed on a high-mileage engine, the others are likely close behind — and running a mix of worn factory units with a single new replacement gives you uneven cylinder-to-cylinder fuel delivery. A matched set is almost always the right answer. S&S sets are flow-matched to deliver consistent fuel across all cylinders. Single-injector replacement is appropriate for low-mileage engines with a documented single failure.
Will S&S injectors work with my existing tuning platform?
Yes. S&S injectors are direct-fit units that work with all common tuning platforms — EFILive, HP Tuners, and any calibration tool used on your platform. Stock-spec S&S injectors require no tune change. If you're stepping up to an oversized set, the tune needs to reflect the new fuel delivery numbers. Hardway Performance handles Cummins calibration in-house. For Duramax and Power Stroke platforms, you'll need a calibrator familiar with your specific platform.
What nozzle size do I need to reach my power goals?
Stock replacement for a reliability rebuild. 15 to 30 percent over for mild builds with bolt-on modifications and a supporting tune. 60 percent over for high-output street builds with a full calibration. 100 to 200 percent over for sled pull and competition builds. 250 to 500 percent over for purpose-built competition trucks at maximum fuel delivery — requires a full supporting fuel system and a dedicated calibration. If you're not sure what your current setup can support, give us a call at 855-910-3823 — we spec injector sets every day and can point you in the right direction.
Do I need new feed tubes when I install injectors?
On the Cummins 5.9 and 6.7, yes — we strongly recommend replacing the injector feed tubes any time you're pulling the injectors. Feed tubes are high-pressure lines that can crack or develop leaks with age, and they're inexpensive insurance while everything is already apart. S&S Diesel 5.9 Cummins feed tubes use genuine Bosch construction. Don't reassemble with old, high-cycle tubes and risk a pressurized fuel leak.
Can Hardway Performance write the tune for my new injectors?
Yes, for Cummins. Hardway Performance writes custom calibrations for Cummins injector upgrades — 5.9 and 6.7, stock replacement through maximum oversize. We also sell S&S injectors for Duramax and Power Stroke applications, but calibration for those platforms is not available from our shop. Physical installation on all platforms is handled by you or your preferred shop. Remote Cummins calibration is available for owner-builders and shops anywhere in the country.
